Tampa Historical Society was founded in 1971 by a group of local historians, preservationists, and genealogists who believed the time was long overdue to answer the observation of one of the town’s first newspapers. The headline in The Sunland Tribune of January 19, 1882 ran thusly: “TAMPA SHOULD HAVE A HISTORICAL SOCIETY WITHOUT DELAY.”
A not-for-profit organization, Tampa Historical Society, Inc. chose as its mascot one of the original seals of the City. The fledgling Society met, for a time, in libraries and living rooms, but just a few years after its founding THS received a gift that acted, in one fine gesture, to preserve one of the most charming and original buildings of pioneer Tampa and to give Society members – and the public – a lasting home for historical programs and events. That gift was the Peter O. Knight House.
